Cos'è un viaggio su misura a Lombok?

Lombok is best visited from May to October (dry season). Mount Rinjani trekking requires 2–3 days with a guide and permit — book 1 week ahead. The Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, Air) offer excellent snorkelling with sea turtles year-round. No vehicles on the Gili Islands. Ayam Taliwang chicken from Karang Taliwang village is the essential food experience. Base in Senggigi or Kuta Lombok for beach and surf; Mataram for cultural access.

Lombok sits 35 km east of Bali across the Wallace Line — the biogeographical boundary where Asian fauna (tigers, orangutans, deer) gives way to Australasian fauna (cockatoos, marsupials, megapodes). The island is dominated by Mount Rinjani, an active volcano rising 3,726 metres with a 6 × 8.5 km caldera lake (Segara Anak) that contains a new lava cone (Gunung Baru Jari) still growing from the 1994 eruption. The Sasak people — 80% of Lombok's 3.7 million population — are ethnically, linguistically, and culturally distinct from the Balinese: predominantly Muslim, with a syncretic tradition called Wetu Telu that blends Islam with animism and ancestor veneration.

The Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air — sit off Lombok's northwest coast with a combined permanent population of around 3,500. No motorised vehicles on any island; transport is by horse cart (cidomo) or bicycle. The snorkelling directly off the beach at Gili Meno produces green sea turtles, black-tip reef sharks, and, at certain hours, a 30-degree water temperature that makes the coral appear luminescent. The underwater sculpture garden at Gili Trawangan — concrete figures colonised by coral — is one of the most photographed dive sites in Indonesia. All three islands suffered significant earthquake damage in 2018 (M7.0) and have rebuilt, with the reef already recovering faster than expected.

Lombok's food tradition is built around Ayam Taliwang — a small, free-range chicken split and grilled over coconut-shell charcoal with a marinade of chilli, shrimp paste, candlenut, and lime that has a heat profile unlike anything else in Indonesia. It is eaten with plecing kangkung (water spinach in fresh tomato and chilli sauce that uses the raw sharpness of the chilli rather than the dried-powder heat of Javanese chilli dishes) and grilled corn. The dish comes from Karang Taliwang village in Mataram, where the original warung families still operate and the chickens are raised on-site. Lombok's sasak bebekk (smoked duck), papaya-leaf-wrapped betutu, and sate rembiga (beef satay with a garlic-and-palm-sugar marinade) complete a food culture that gets a fraction of Bali's culinary attention while offering flavours that are bolder and more singular.

7 giorni classico

  1. 1
Giorno 1: Arrival and Mataram — Sasak Culture
Fly to Lombok International Airport (LOP) or arrive by fast boat from Bali (35 minutes from Padang Bai). Mataram is the island capital — not a tourist centre but a working Sasak city. The Pura Meru temple in Cakranegara (the Hindu Balinese quarter of Mataram) is the largest Hindu temple on Lombok: 33 miniature towers representing the Hindu universe's 33 layers. Adjacent: the Mayura Water Palace (1744), a floating pavilion on a rectangular pond used for royal courts. Dinner: Ayam Taliwang at the original Karang Taliwang village — order a half-chicken (setengah ekor), specify 'pedas' (spicy) vs. 'tidak pedas' (mild), and wait 25 minutes for the grill.
  2. 2
Giorno 2: Rinjani Trek Day 1 — Sembalun to Crater Rim
4 a.m. departure from Mataram to Sembalun village (2.5 hours). The Rinjani National Park permit and guide are arranged through the official TNGR portal — book 1 week ahead. The Sembalun route (the standard summit route) ascends through open savannah grassland before entering montane forest at 2,000 m. The trail is well-marked but steep (1,700 m elevation gain on Day 1). Camp at Plawangan 2 (2,641 m) on the crater rim by 4 p.m. The reward: the caldera view at sunset — Segara Anak lake 700 m below, turquoise and cold, and the Gunung Baru Jari lava cone rising from its centre in a perfect black triangle, still emitting white steam.
  3. 3
Giorno 3: Rinjani Summit at 3,726 m — Descent to Lake
2 a.m. summit push from Plawangan 2 — 3 hours of steep rocky trail in darkness. The summit cone has loose volcanic scree; poles are helpful. Sunrise at the summit: the shadow of Rinjani's cone extends 70 km to the west across the Lombok Strait and onto Bali — on a clear day you can see Mount Agung and Mount Batur. Descent back to Plawangan 2, then down into the caldera itself (a steep 800 m descent on a zigzag trail). Segara Anak lake at 2,008 m — the hot springs at Aik Kalak on the lake shore reach 38°C. Camp at the lakeside, rest, swim in cold lake water then warm in the spring.
  4. 4
Giorno 4: Rinjani — Descent via Senaru
The Senaru descent (western route) passes through primary montane rainforest — black-eared monkeys, endemic birds (Rinjani scops owl, black-naped fruit dove), and massive ancient ferns. The forest is dense, the trail slippery after rain. Arrive Senaru village by afternoon. Senaru is a Bayan-area Sasak village: traditional lumbung rice barns (raised on posts with mushroom-shaped anti-rat discs) and the last practitioners of Wetu Telu — the syncretic Islam that incorporates ancestor veneration and only prays three times daily rather than five. Transfer to Kuta Lombok by evening.
  5. 5
Giorno 5: Kuta Lombok and South Coast — Mawun, Selong Belanak
Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Bali's Kuta) is a white-sand bay town with a surf break, low-key accommodation, and no jet-ski. The south coast road from Kuta passes through a series of hidden bays: Mawun (a perfect horseshoe of white sand, calm water in the morning, small surf in the afternoon), Selong Belanak (a 2 km arc with the gentlest beginner surf break in Lombok), and Gerupuk (the surf spot where the breaks are accessed by boat). Hire a motorbike from Kuta and ride the coast road — the hills between bays are treeless and golden-grassed like the Scottish Highlands, the contrast with the turquoise bays below is extraordinary.
  6. 6
Giorno 6: Gili Meno — Turtles and Underwater Sculpture
Fast boat from Kuta Lombok to Gili Meno (1 hour, or via Bangsal harbour). Gili Meno is the quietest of the three Gili Islands — fewer bars, fewer people, the best snorkelling. The turtle sanctuary at the west side of the island: green sea turtles feed on reef algae at 3–5 metres, swimming past you so closely you could touch them (don't). The underwater sculpture garden at Gili Trawangan (15-minute boat to the east): Jason deCaires Taylor's concrete figures installed in 2006, now colonised by hard and soft coral — a meditation on time and decay. Sunset at Gili Trawangan's west beach — the Bali sunset that everyone misses because they're on the wrong island.
  7. 7
Giorno 7: Gili Snorkel and Departure
Morning snorkel: Gili Meno's Turtle Point, where black-tip reef sharks rest on the sand at 4 metres in the early morning. Then fast boat to Bangsal and transfer to Lombok airport (1.5 hours) for afternoon flight. The boat crossing through the Gili channel gives a final view of Rinjani rising above Lombok — the complete context of the island in one frame: volcano, coast, tropical sea.

Giorno 1: Mataram Arrival — Ayam Taliwang and Cakranegara
Pura Meru, Mayura Water Palace, Karang Taliwang dinner.
  2. 2
Giorno 2: Sukarara Weaving Village and Sade
Sukarara village: Sasak women weave songket cloth (silk and metallic thread) on backstrap looms. No synthetic threads — the process takes 2–3 months for a single cloth. Sade village is a preserved traditional Sasak hamlet: earth floors made and smoothed with buffalo dung (naturally waterproofing), no modern facades.
  3. 3
Giorno 3: Rinjani Trek Day 1 — Sembalun to Plawangan 2
Sembalun grassland ascent. Crater rim at 2,641 m. Sunset caldera view.
  4. 4
    Giorno 4: Rinjani Summit — 2 a.m. Departure
3,726 m summit at dawn. Bali visible on the horizon. Descend to caldera lake.
  5. 5
Giorno 5: Segara Anak Lake — Hot Springs
Lakeside camp. Aik Kalak hot springs. Cold lake swim. Rest day after summit.
  6. 6
Giorno 6: Senaru Descent — Wetu Telu Village
Primary rainforest descent. Endemic bird sightings with guide. Senaru traditional Sasak community. Transfer to Senggigi.
  7. 7
Giorno 7: Senggigi — North Lombok Coast
Senggigi beach. Batu Bolong temple (small Hindu shrine on an ocean rock at low tide). Scenic north Lombok drive to Mangsit. Gin and tonic at the Oberoi Lombok beach terrace.
  8. 8
Giorno 8: Gili Air — Cycling and Snorkelling
Fast boat to Gili Air (closest to Lombok, most 'local' of the three Gilis). Bicycle the 5 km circumference in 45 minutes. Snorkel the north corner: juvenile reef fish nursery, garden eels in the sand.
  9. 9
Giorno 9: Gili Meno — Turtles and Silence
The quietest Gili. Turtle Point snorkel. No bars open before 10 a.m. Hammock beach day. Underwater sculpture garden afternoon.
  10. 10
Giorno 10: Gili Trawangan — Sunset and Night Dive
Gili T's west beach sunset is the best in the Gilis. Night dive: reef critters emerge — nudibranchs, moray eels, and bioluminescence in the boat wake.
  11. 11
Giorno 11: Kuta Lombok — South Coast Road
Fast boat back to Bangsal, drive south to Kuta Lombok. Mawun, Selong Belanak, Gerupuk surf assessment.
  12. 12
Giorno 12: Surf Lesson at Selong Belanak
Selong Belanak is the best beginner break in Lombok — consistent 1-metre lefts on a sandy bottom. Local instructors from the village at the east end of the beach.
  13. 13
Giorno 13: Tanjung Aan and Pink Sand
Tanjung Aan: a bay split by a headland into two beaches — one white sand (finer, western Indonesian) and one pepper-corn sand (coarser volcanic grain, uniquely textured). The southern headland viewpoint gives the full panoramic context of the Lombok south coast.
  14. 14
Giorno 14: Mataram Return and Departure
Drive north to Mataram. Final Ayam Taliwang lunch. Airport transfer. Lombok repays exploration beyond the Gilis — Rinjani and the south coast are the real island.

How difficult is the Mount Rinjani trek?+

The summit route (Sembalun up, Senaru down, 3 days/2 nights) is strenuous but doable for fit hikers without technical climbing experience. The summit push from Plawangan 2 (2 a.m. to 5 a.m.) involves loose volcanic scree and requires trekking poles. The caldera descent is steep. You must have a licensed TNGR guide (mandatory) and the trail is well-maintained. The altitude at the summit (3,726 m) can cause mild altitude sickness — move slowly, hydrate. The crater lake option (no summit, 2 days/1 night) is accessible to most fit adults.

Are the Gili Islands better visited from Lombok or Bali?+

From Bali (Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan fast boat, 90 minutes, multiple daily departures) is slightly faster and more common. From Lombok (Bangsal harbour to Gili Meno, 20 minutes by public boat) is easier to integrate with a Lombok itinerary. The Gilis are independent destinations — many visitors base there for 3–5 nights without going to Lombok or Bali proper. If combining Rinjani and Gili, Lombok-based access makes more logistical sense.

What is the Wallace Line and why does it matter for Lombok?+

The Wallace Line is a biogeographical boundary drawn by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859, running between Bali and Lombok. West of the line: Asian fauna (tigers, primates, deer). East: Australasian fauna (cockatoos, megapode birds, Wallace's flying frog). Lombok sits just east of the line, which is why its bird life includes sulphur-crested cockatoos and Australian-origin species while Bali has kingfishers and Asian bee-eaters. The 35-km Lombok Strait is deep enough (300 m) that even during ice-age low sea levels, the two islands were never connected — enabling divergent evolution for millions of years.

What is Wetu Telu and how is it different from mainstream Islam?+

Wetu Telu is the syncretic religious practice of some Bayan-area Sasak people in north Lombok. It combines Islamic beliefs with ancestor veneration, animism, and local cosmology. Wetu Telu practitioners pray three times daily (not five), observe Ramadan for only three days, and maintain pre-Islamic rites around planting, harvesting, and death. The practice is declining — most Sasak are now Waktu Lima (full Islamic observance) — but survives in Senaru and Bayan villages. It is a fascinating example of religion adapting to local culture rather than replacing it.

Has Lombok fully recovered from the 2018 earthquakes?+

The August 5, 2018, M7.0 earthquake and the series of M6+ aftershocks killed 564 people and caused widespread damage across north Lombok and the Gili Islands. By 2022–2023, tourist infrastructure on the Gili Islands had largely been rebuilt. North Lombok villages were slower to recover. The coral reef around the Gilis was damaged by underwater landslides but has shown significant natural recovery. Some dive sites show regrowth faster than expected — 5 years of reduced dive pressure during recovery helped.
