Cebu is the second city of the Philippines and the historical centre of Spanish colonisation — Ferdinand Magellan arrived here in 1521, planted a cross (still present in a small chapel on Magallanes Street), and was killed by Datu Lapu-Lapu on Mactan Island 49 days later in what is celebrated as the first anti-colonial resistance in Asian history.
