맞춤 여행 안내 — Luxor?

Luxor is best experienced by crossing to the west bank at 6 a.m. for Valley of the Kings before heat peaks, then Hatshepsut's temple by 8:30 a.m. East bank: Karnak Temple's Hypostyle Hall at 7 a.m. opening, then the uncrowded Sacred Lake and Red Chapel. Book KV17 (Seti I) and Tutankhamun's tomb separately. Allow minimum 3 days; 5 days completes the major sites.

Luxor is ancient Thebes — for 1,400 years the capital of the most powerful empire in the ancient world, where pharaohs from the Middle Kingdom through the New Kingdom built on a scale that has not been surpassed. The east bank holds Karnak Temple (the largest ancient religious complex ever built, covering 100 hectares with 25 centuries of construction visible in its layers) and Luxor Temple (connected to Karnak by the 3 km Avenue of Sphinxes, inaugurated by Amenhotep III, completed by Ramesses II, and buried under medieval Islamic buildings now excavated). The west bank — the City of the Dead — holds the Valley of the Kings (63 royal tombs), Valley of the Queens, Hatshepsut's temple, and the Colossi of Memnon. One city; 35+ sites.

Valley of the Kings entry requires a base ticket plus individual tomb tickets — three tombs are included in the base price (changed periodically by the Ministry of Antiquities), and additional tombs cost €5–€15 each. The tomb of Seti I (KV17) has the finest painted decoration in the valley — an astronomical ceiling in Burial Chamber J shows the first star map in history — but its ticket costs €25 separately and is closed periodically for conservation. The tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62) costs an additional €20; his mummy remains in situ inside a climate-controlled case, his golden mask is in the Cairo Museum. Arrive at 6 a.m. when the valley opens: morning is cool and the tombs are almost empty for the first 90 minutes.

Karnak Temple is best experienced by going directly to the Sacred Lake section after the initial Hypostyle Hall crowd — the Hypostyle Hall (134 columns up to 21 metres high in an 18th-Dynasty construction covering the area of a football field) draws every visitor first. The Sacred Lake, Thutmose III's Festival Hall (the oldest building still standing in the complex, with unique tent-pole columns), and the Red Chapel of Hatshepsut in the Open-Air Museum (separate ticket, €4) are consistently uncrowded. The Sound and Light Show runs nightly at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. — atmospheric but not essential if daylight visits go deep enough.

Valley of the Kings morning
Walk between 134 columns of Karnak's Hypostyle Hall at 7 a.m. — 21 metres high, still carrying ochre and blue paint from 3,300 years ago, a forest of carved stone that no modern structure has come close to matching in sheer overwhelm.
Hot-air balloon over Thebes — Luxor

7일 클래식

  1. 1
일차 1: West Bank at 6 a.m. — Valley of the Kings
Cross the Nile by local ferry (EGP 5, runs from 5:30 a.m.) and hire a taxi at the west bank landing (agree a half-day rate, approximately EGP 200). Arrive at Valley of the Kings at 6 a.m. opening. Use your base ticket for three included tombs; recommended: KV9 (Ramesses V/VI — astronomical ceilings, large and imposing), KV11 (Ramesses III — the longest tomb in the valley at 125 m, with polychrome banqueting scenes). Buy the separate KV62 (Tutankhamun, EGP 300) ticket — his mummy in situ, the scale surprisingly small. If visiting KV17 (Seti I), book this specifically on arrival at the ticket office. Return by 10 a.m. before heat. Afternoon rest at hotel.
  2. 2
    일차 2: Hatshepsut's Temple & Colossi
Return to the west bank at 6:30 a.m. for Deir el-Bahari (Hatshepsut's Mortuary Temple) — three colonnaded terraces rising against a sheer limestone cliff, built 1479–1458 BCE by Egypt's female pharaoh. The upper terrace Punt reliefs (showing a trading expedition to modern Somalia or Eritrea) are the most narrative surviving decoration in Egypt. By 7:30 a.m. the temple is almost empty. Drive 1 km to the Colossi of Memnon — two 18-metre quartzite seated statues of Amenhotep III, the only above-ground monuments surviving from what was once the largest mortuary complex in Egypt. Medinet Habu (Ramesses III's temple, the best-preserved New Kingdom mortuary temple with intact colour) is 2 km south; allow 90 minutes.
  3. 3
    일차 3: Karnak Temple at 7 a.m.
Karnak opens at 7 a.m.; at the Hypostyle Hall by 7:15 a.m. before the first tour groups from cruise ships. Walk through 134 columns — 21 metres high in the central aisle, 13 metres in the side aisles — still carrying blue, red, and ochre paint in sheltered sections. Then head directly past most visitors to the Sacred Lake (where priests purified themselves before ritual), Thutmose III's Festival Hall with unique tent-pole papyrus columns, and the Open-Air Museum (EGP 60 extra) housing the Red Chapel of Hatshepsut — 315 red quartzite blocks recording her divine birth, reassembled from rubble where Thutmose III had scattered them after erasing her name. Exit 2 hours before the noon crush.
  4. 4
일차 4: Luxor Temple & Museum
Luxor Temple (east bank, on the corniche) opens at 6 a.m. and the early morning light on the colonnade of Amenhotep III is exceptional. The Abu el-Haggag Mosque built directly into the temple's inner court during the Islamic period remains active — its floor level is 6 metres above the Pharaonic floors, showing exactly how deeply the temple was buried when discovered. The Avenue of Sphinxes connecting Luxor to Karnak (3 km, completed in 2021 after decades of excavation) is walkable in 40 minutes. Luxor Museum (between the two temples on the corniche) is small but excellent — the Royal Mummies exhibition and two mummies of Ahmose I and Ramesses I are on display.
  5. 5
일차 5: Valley of the Queens & Nobles' Tombs
Valley of the Queens holds the tomb of Nefertari (QV66) — the best-painted tomb in Egypt by far, with colours preserved as if applied last century. Only 150 visitors allowed per day; book through a licensed guide or agent at least 2 days ahead (EGP 1,000 separate ticket). If unavailable, Tombs of the Nobles (Luxor west bank, separate site) are undervisited and show daily life scenes rather than afterlife scenes — hunting, fishing, feasting — painted with a naturalism that the formal royal tombs lack. Particularly: TT100 (Rekhmire, vizier under Thutmose III, showing tribute from Keftiu/Minoan Crete) and TT52 (Nakht, agricultural scenes).
  6. 6
일차 6: Hot Air Balloon & Dendera Temple
Sunrise hot-air balloon over the west bank fields and temples launches at 5:30 a.m. — Luxor balloon companies include Magic Horizon and Hod Hod Soliman (EGP 2,000–3,000). Fly north 60 km to Dendera — the most completely preserved Ptolemaic temple in Egypt, dedicated to Hathor. Its roof is accessible and from it you look down into a columned hypostyle hall and across the Nile valley. The zodiac ceiling (a copy; original in the Louvre) is inside the Osiris chapel. The crypt contains wall carvings interpreted by fringe theorists as electric light bulbs (they are lotus flower reliefs). Return to Luxor by 2 p.m.
  7. 7
    일차 7: Abydos & Departure
Drive or join a tour 150 km north to Abydos — the most sacred city in ancient Egypt, pilgrimage destination for 3,000 years, where Osiris's head was buried according to tradition. The Temple of Seti I at Abydos holds the King List (showing 76 pharaoh cartouches from Narmer to Seti I) and the finest painted reliefs in the world — colours so vivid they appear freshly done. The adjacent Temple of Ramesses II (smaller, less visited, accessed via a 10-minute walk) has an equally intimate atmosphere. Return to Luxor International Airport for afternoon or evening departure.

자주 묻는 질문

How many days do I need in Luxor?+

Three full days covers the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Luxor Temple, Hatshepsut's temple, and the Colossi. Five days adds Dendera, Abydos, the Nobles' Tombs, and the Luxor Museum properly. Seven days is the complete experience including Abydos, Esna, the workmen's village, and KV17 (if open). Do not try to compress Luxor into a day trip from Cairo — the density of sites and the heat require proper pacing.

Is it safe to drink tap water in Luxor?+

No — drink bottled water exclusively in Luxor and throughout Egypt. Dehydration is a serious risk, especially at outdoor sites in summer (40–50°C). Carry 2 litres per person for any half-day outdoor visit. The best times for outdoor sites are 6–10 a.m. and 4–6 p.m.; midday visits in summer are physically dangerous for unacclimatised visitors. Winter (November–February) temperatures of 20–25°C make all-day site visits manageable.

Can I visit Luxor independently or do I need a guide?+

Independent visits are fully practical. Tickets are sold at each site entrance; local taxis and a basic Arabic map app cover transport. The main advantage of a licensed Egyptologist guide is context — the hieroglyphic texts on temple walls become readable, the tomb sequences become narrative, and the 3,000 years of history become coherent. For a first visit to Egypt, a guide for the Valley of the Kings day and the Karnak visit adds significant understanding. The Egyptian Tourist Authority registers licensed guides; verify registration before booking privately.

What is the difference between Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens?+

Valley of the Kings holds royal tombs from the New Kingdom period (1550–1070 BCE) — pharaohs and occasionally high officials. 63 tombs discovered; some open, some closed for conservation. Valley of the Queens holds queens' and royal children's tombs from the same period — 90 tombs. The tomb of Nefertari (QV66, wife of Ramesses II) in the Valley of the Queens is widely considered the finest painted tomb in all of Egypt, with its colours better preserved than anything in the Kings' Valley.

Should I combine Luxor with a Nile cruise?+

A 4-night cruise from Luxor to Aswan (or reverse) covers Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Aswan with accommodation on the boat. The practical advantages: no daily transport organisation, guided Egyptologist included, air-conditioned base. Disadvantages: cruise schedules are pre-set (sites visited at suboptimal times, usually mid-morning when crowds peak), and the best Luxor sites (Abydos, Dendera, Nefertari's tomb) are not on standard cruise itineraries. The ideal combination is 3 self-guided days in Luxor first, then join the cruise for the river section.
